This BBC TRIPTYCH of short shorts were written and devised using real testimonials written by young girls and teens posted online on the BBC’s website www.bbc.co.uk/slink.
I wrote the films and shot them as a bouncy, funny, sad triptych that used dramatic irony in voice over and lyrical film making to create small narratives with big emotions. The films were made quickly and broadcast back online to the thousands of subscribers of the website- the immediacy of the response from the teens to the films was overwhelming.
Music and sound design was done by Bristol’s astonishingly talented Tom Bugs.
S16mm & DVcam: 3 x 3 minutes: made in Bristol
The Real Life films project came about during the 2005 internal commissioning
round at the BBC. We’d recently completed a series of short cartoons
about puberty (Am I a Freak?) and were keen to explore further rich media
projects.
Our users were already sharing their real life stories on the website, tales of domestic violence, abuse, bullying, love and loss – reports from the front line of teenage life. We wanted to bring these stories to life and decided to do this with film.
The aim was to show viewers events that had really happened, and happened to somebody like themselves (not to famous people, not to the particularly rich nor the particularly poor).
Another major objective was to avoid a “homemade or user generated feel.” We wanted production to be slick, dynamic and attractive to teens. Most importantly, these films were supposed to be about teens and for teens, not designed to worry parents or to create shock value.
We were delighted with the films Esther and APT Films created for us. We
felt that the brief was met with passion, creativity and warmth and we know
that they will bring our site to life.
